Celebrating Spartanburg’s New Courthouse: A Blend of History and Modernity. - Spartanburg, SC
On December 17, 2023, Spartanburg County marked a significant milestone with the dedication of its new $120 million courthouse. The event coincided with the 192nd anniversary of the Village of Spartanburg’s establishment, symbolizing a new chapter in the county’s justice system.
The state-of-the-art courthouse, funded by a 2017 capital penny tax approved by local voters, features modern amenities and enhanced safety measures. Its design includes three separate floors for public access, staff, inmates, and judges—an upgrade from the outdated structure that once posed safety risks by mixing these groups.
The largest courtroom seats 241 people, reflecting the building’s capacity to serve the community efficiently. With 17 courtrooms and space for future expansion, the courthouse is built to meet current needs and accommodate future growth.
Local leaders highlighted the courthouse's architectural significance, which pays homage to Spartanburg’s past through its stately pillars while embodying the county’s vision for justice and progress.
“This courthouse is a testament to our citizens’ investment in the future,” said Manning Lynch, Chairman of Spartanburg County Council. Clerk of Court Amy Cox added, “This is not just a building—it’s a legacy that will serve Spartanburg County for generations.”
The new courthouse represents not only a leap forward in functionality and safety but also a reflection of the community’s values and aspirations.
